WALTER WELLER - music director

Walter Weller’s career as an orchestral conductor began in 1966 when he stepped in to replace the great Karl Böhm. Since then he has conducted renowned orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the great London orchestras, and the Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. He has been principal conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, the Sinfonieorchester Basel, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Since becoming Music Director of the NOB in the 2007-2008 season, he  has launched a series of cycles devoted to the music of Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Mahler. His recordings with the NOB on the Fuga Libera label – of Glazunov, Martinů, Strauss, and Suk – have been acclaimed by music-lovers and international critics alike and are worthy editions to his existing discography.
