Currentzis Teodor

Teodor Currentzis is Music Director of the Novosibirsk State Opera and Orchestra (since 2003/04) and is the Founder and Artistic Director of the period instrument ensemble Musica Aeterna formed in 2004. Combining his knowledge and passion for early music with contemporary composers and new music, Teodor started the Territoria Modern Art Festival - a new music festival in Moscow.
He is becoming increasingly recognized for his wide and varying knowledge of symphonic and operatic repertoire and his interesting approach to programming. In summer 2007, he made his debut at the Athens Festival with his orchestra with two programmes that included works by Kanceli, Tchaikovsky, Part, Kurliandsky and Purcell.
His recording of "Dido and Aeneas" with Musica Aeterna, Deborah Yorke and Simone Kermes will be released in Autumn 08 by Alpha Records with whom he has an exclusive relationship.
Following his successful debut at Paris Opera, Teodor will return next season with a new production of "Macbeth". From 09/10 onwards, Teodor will work regularly at the New York City Opera.
He conducts all of the major Russian orchestras including the Russian National Orchestra, the New Russia Symphony Orchestra and the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra of Vladimir Spivakov with whom he has the post of "Permanent Conductor". In summer 2006 he made his US debut on tour with the Russian National Orchestra and in Italy at the Tuscan Sun Festival working with soloists such as Dmitry Horotovsky, Anna Netrebko and Yuri Bashmet.
Russia has become Teodor's home since the beginning of the 1990s, when he began studying conducting at the state conservatory of St. Petersburg, under the tutelage of Professor Ilya Musin, whose pupils, among others, were renowned conductors Odyseuss Dimitriadis, Valery Gergyev, and Semyon Bychkov.
